Your organization has spent months building Q&A visuals into Power BI — dashboards where business users type questions in plain language and get instant charts back. In December 2026, every single one of those visuals will stop working. Microsoft has officially announced the full deprecation of Power BI Q&A.
The good news: Power BI Copilot is a vastly more capable successor — built on generative AI rather than the rule-based NLP engine that always made Q&A feel fragile. The bad news: there is no automatic migration wizard. Teams that don't act now will face broken reports in January 2027. This article explains what's different, what exactly goes away, and how to migrate cleanly.
What is Power BI Copilot?
Power BI Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant embedded across the Power BI and Microsoft Fabric platform. Unlike Q&A, which relied on a hand-crafted NLP system with rigid synonym matching, Copilot uses Large Language Models (LLMs) — the same underlying technology behind ChatGPT. This means Copilot understands context, multi-step queries, and ambiguous phrasing that Q&A routinely failed on.
Copilot reached General Availability (GA) in early 2026 and is integrated across multiple workflows: as a Copilot pane inside reports, as a standalone chat experience on the Power BI home screen, in the DAX Query View, and in the Power BI Mobile App (Preview). The input character limit has been raised from 500 to 10,000 characters — a clear signal that more complex, multi-step analysis is now fully supported.

The December 2026 Deprecation: What Exactly Goes Away
Microsoft officially announced the deprecation of Power BI Q&A on December 1, 2025. From December 2026 onwards, all Q&A components will be automatically disabled — with no runtime warning inside your reports.
There is no automatic migration wizard. Existing Q&A visuals will not be replaced by Copilot components — they will simply be removed. Teams that don't actively migrate will lose functionality with no recovery path.

Your Data Model as the Foundation for Copilot Success
The most common mistake teams make during the Copilot migration: expecting Copilot to "just work" out of the box — then being disappointed when the AI picks the wrong measures or generates irrelevant visuals. The new AI Instructions feature in Fabric (2026) lets you embed business rules, default filters, and company-specific terminology directly in the semantic model. If your organization defines "net revenue" differently from how Power BI would interpret it by default, this is where you codify that.

Start the migration now — not in October 2026. In practice, cleaning up a grown semantic model takes longer than expected, and Q&A Setup configurations don't translate 1:1 into Copilot descriptions or AI Instructions.

- Clean up your semantic model: Implement star schema, add descriptions, set up AI Instructions — before your first Copilot test

- Train business users: Copilot prompting works differently from Q&A — plan a short onboarding session for business teams
- Assess embedded scenarios separately: Copilot for PaaS Embedded is not yet GA — plan an alternative approach for ISV scenarios
